That probably is right AS 2.0 came in with OSX 10.5. It may still be worth trying the quoted form technique.
However, some further thing to try follow. Apologies in advance if you already know this stuff.
The applescript do shell script command uses a basic shell /bin/sh Terminal does not usually use this. To find out what it does use try echo $SHELL at the command line. This may be why you get different results from Applescript and Terminal.
You can make your do shell script command runs using the same shell as the terminal by starting this shell first. e.g. if your $SHELL command returns /bin/bash then try
do shell script "/bin/bash " & yourCommand

Likewise you can test if your command will work in the do shell script by typing /bin/sh your command in the Terminal.
